Here’s what the manufactures don’t want you to know…

There has been a concerted effort to promote e-cigarettes over the past few years as a safer, even harmless alternative to smoking. In our region the promotion has especially targeted a younger population. But, are they really safer, or even safe at all?

A recent study from the UCSF School of Nursing shows the average e-cigarette user will spend more than $2000 per year in extra health care costs.

While it is true that e-cigarettes do not burn tobacco which results in a significant risk of exposure to carcinogens secondary to the burning process, e-cigarettes are not without risk. In 2018 the National Academy of Sciences released a report reviewing over 800 studies. This summary report showed e-cigarettes contain and emit toxic substances, and youth who use these products are at an increased risk of coughing and wheezing as well as increasing the risk of worsening asthma.

Two primary ingredients in the liquid are propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin which are both toxic to cells. E-cigarettes also have acrolein.  This chemical is used as an herbicide and can cause lung injury and may lead to asthma and lung cancer. These harmful chemicals are already in the e-cigarette, ready to cause damage.

Not only do e-cigarettes contain harmful chemicals, they also produce multiple dangerous chemicals when used. A few of these are: Formaldehyde, Benzene, and heavy metals (nickel, tin, lead).

Finally, the idea, pushed by the e-cigarette industry, that these products are beneficial to help smokers quit is patently false. The FDA has not found ANY e-cigarette to be effective and safe to help smokers quit.

If you smoke or use an e-cigarette product and want to quit, contact your physician or one of our Better Smiles dentists to start this discussion.
